Whether you are seeking the vibrant energy of a bustling city, the tranquillity of a lakeside retreat, or the rustic charm of a mountain village, Bavaria has something for everyone. 

I visited the region a few years ago as part of a road trip from Munich for Relais & Châteaux magazine with my partner Matt. We mainly stayed around Berchtesgaden National Park in the Bavarian Alps and loved it. Wherever you decide to stay, I am sure you will have a great time as there is so much to do and see.

In this article, you will also find the best things to do, what to see and the top green hotels in each location. I selected these accommodations by researching on ETIC Hotels, Ecobnb and bookdifferent by carefully reading their website and looking for green certification.

However, I understand these hotels are not the cheapest and the most budget-friendly places to stay in Bavaria, but they are the most eco-friendly. Unfortunately, mixing the two is not always easy, and I have tried to select accommodations that focus on making a difference whilst being affordable. 1- Munich: the best area for city life

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is a vibrant metropolis full of history, culture and charm. It is renowned for its stunning architecture, including iconic landmarks like the Nymphenburg Palace and the Frauenkirche. 

As one of the best cities to visit in Europe, it also offers a thriving cultural scene, with world-class museums, galleries and theatres, as well as lively beer gardens and traditional Bavarian cuisine. 

Whether you are exploring its historic Old Town, enjoying a stroll along the Isar River or experiencing the festivities of Oktoberfest, Munich is the perfect place to stay in Bavaria if you are looking for a buzzing urban atmosphere mixed with a rich heritage.

Things to do & see in Munich

Whatever your age, a visit to the Old Town of Munich, with its ancient and impressive Marienplatz square, is a must. There, you will see the most famous attraction, the Glockenspiel clock, which stands out on the facade of the New Town Hall, or Neues Rathaus, as it is called in German. 

The Frauenkirche, the cathedral of Munich, is another famous attraction you should not miss, along with Peterskirche, St. Peter’s Church. It is a Roman Catholic church situated in the centre of the city with its 91-meter tower known as Alter Peter – Old Pete. Try climbing it to enjoy the magical views!

Your sightseeing should also include the Residenz palace, the Deutsches Museum, the largest science and technology museum in the world, and the BMW Welt & Museum if you want to take a sneak peek at the most iconic BMW car models.

As the sun descends, the bustling nightlife of Munich appears. You will find plenty of traditional beer halls and pubs to satisfy your thirst, many Irish pubs and trendy cocktail bars to drink and relax, and a few classic discos or other rock clubs to dance until dawn.

And if you happen to plan your trip in October, do not miss the largest 2-week folk festival in the world, the famous Octoberfest. The city is also known for its role in the events of World War II and the post-war Nuremberg Trials, which are commemorated through its museums and memorials. 

Today, Nuremberg is a vibrant city with a thriving arts scene, bustling markets and festivals, making it a captivating destination for history buffs staying in Bavaria. 

Things to do & see in Nuremberg

One of the best things to do in Nuremberg is to wander and let yourself travel back in time as you immerse yourself in all the historic vibes that the city exudes. Start by strolling through the Old Town, also known as Altstadt. It was almost destroyed during World War II but was rebuilt and fortunately retained the same architecture. 

Continue your journey by visiting the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, along with one of the most admirable fortresses in Europe that surrounds the Altstadt. If you feel like it, you can also explore the 5km trail parallel to the walls, where you will find a small shopping area, the Handwerkerhof, with family-run shops selling traditional items handmade by artisans. 

Some of the most iconic attractions of the city are the ones linked to Nazi history. The first is the Nuremberg Palace of Justice. Here, in the historic Room 600, the Nuremberg Trials took place, during which the leaders of the Nazi regime were convicted of crimes against humanity. The second, equally impressive site, is the Nazi Party Congress Documentation Center and conference grounds, spread across the vast park around Lake Dutzendteich. 

Another must-visit is the Way of Human Rights, a walkable public artwork, with 27 pillars, 2 round-bottomed panels and an oak tree, each engraved with one of the 30 human rights.

Last but not least is the Toy Museum, which opens a window into 600 years of history by filling successive floors with elaborate dollhouses, wood sculptures and innovative technological toys. Take a rest and sip a cup of coffee in the beautiful courtyard.

To make your walk more delightful and satisfy your appetite at the same time, you can try the famous street food, the Nuremberg sausages. They come with fresh bread, mustard and horseradish (Kren), and they are simply delicious! A must-try in Nuremberg.

Bonus tip: if you happen to visit Nuremberg in the days leading up to Christmas, you will have the special opportunity to visit the Christkindlsmarkte, which is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Let the Christmas spirit guide you through the city as you sip some Glühwein, the well-known German mulled wine, and munch on traditional gingerbread.

Things to do & see in Rothenburg

The first attraction you should not miss is the Marktplatz (the Town Hall) on the square of the same name. It is an imposing building in Gothic style but with distinct Renaissance elements. You can visit its tower where you can admire the panoramic views of the city and the entire Tauber valley.

The Walls of Rothenburg are also unmissable, dating back to 1350. Along their entire length, 12 towers arise, which are also the gates to the historic centre of the city.

The medieval St. James Church with its Holy Blood, a masterpiece of German wood carving, stands out in the area and is also worth visiting.

Plonlein, on the other hand, is the trademark of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. If you cross Obere Schmiedgasse, after passing dozens of shops, you will find this famous yellow and half-timbered house.

On your romantic walks, be sure to enjoy sweets which seem to have been taken from a fairy tale scene, such as the famous Rothenburg Schneeballs. Resembling snowballs, these candies are made with strips of dough rolled into balls that are covered in chocolate or powdered sugar after first being fried. So yummy!

At the heart of the park lies the iconic Watzmann Mountain and the serene Lake Königssee, where nature is at its best. 

Berchtesgaden is also home to the second power centre of the Nazi dictatorship, the renowned Eagle’s Nest. Depending on snow conditions, it is open to visitors from mid-May until the end of October.

After inhaling so much pure oxygen, you can engage in some outdoor activities. Berchtesgaden offers hundreds of kilometres of marked trails suitable for all levels, from gentle strolls to challenging treks.

If you are more into cycling, you can experience the challenging Alpine terrain and take a look at other towns in the surrounding area, such as Salzburg, Bad Reichenhall and Ramsau.

Looking for aquatic experiences? Not to worry. You can swim in the crystal clear waters of Aschauer Weiher during the summer months or, if you are brave enough, dive into the chilly waters of Lake Königssee and Lake Hintersee.

For skiing adventures, the ski resorts of the area provide a diversity of slopes ranging from family-friendly to adrenaline-pumping options.

For example, you can explore the Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany, with its privileged views in all directions. Take the state-of-the-art cable car to reach the top and do not forget to capture the moment with your camera. 

You can also reach the Alpspitze, where you can see the town below and the surrounding peaks embracing the valley. Do not miss the opportunity to experience the AlpspiX skywalk for an added touch of fun.

Another great thing to do is to stroll around Lake Eibsee, the mountain lake that is among the most picturesque lakes in Bavaria, and be mesmerised by the reflections of the majestic Zugspitze and its neighbouring peaks on its surface.

Things to do & see in Chiemsee

Explore the three picturesque islands of Lake Chiemsee to fully enjoy it, all connected by a boat. Marvel at its opulent interiors and stroll through the beautiful gardens inspired by Versailles.

The third island of Chiemsee, Krautinsel (although uninhabited), offers plenty of water sports opportunities on its shores. It is worth visiting, especially in summer, when you can try water sliding or sailing on the crystal clear Chiemsee waters.

Finally, nature lovers will enjoy exploring the picturesque landscapes around Chiemsee by cycling or walking along the many trails and paths that wind through forests, meadows and quaint Bavarian villages.

Things to do & see in Regensburg

You will love walking and sightseeing around Regensburg! A stroll across the Stone Bridge, which represents a masterpiece of medieval bridge architecture, will take you to the Regensburg Cathedral (the Cathedral of Light), one of the most important Gothic churches in Germany – it took more than five centuries to complete it. 

If you feel brave enough, you can climb to the top of the Cathedral for breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings, providing a unique perspective on the historic skyline of Regensburg.

Things to do & see in Füssen

What else but visiting the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle, to begin with? Only possible as part of a guided tour, this fairytale castle that inspired Disney to create the Magic Kingdom is located between Alpine peaks and heavenly lakes. Among its impressive rooms, the Sängersaal (Minstrels’ Hall) stands out, decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the opera Tannhäuser.

Leaving the Castle, you can walk 10 minutes to Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) for another stunning perspective. Spanning the magnificent Pöllat Gorge above a cascading waterfall just beyond the castle, it is said that Ludwig himself loved nighttime visits to this spot.

The Hohenschwangau Castle is another attraction not to miss. It exudes a more modest charm compared to Neuschwanstein and represents a neo-Gothic architectural style.

Tucked away in a former lakeside hotel, just 400 meters from the castle ticket office, you will find the Museum der Bayerischen Könige, an architecturally striking museum offering a treasure trove of historical information about the former royal family of Bavaria. It is also an ideal place for a quiet picnic after your castle tours.

Finally, the town of Füssen itself is very picturesque. Located at the southern end of the Romantic Road, one of the most beautiful road trips in Europe, and 2 hours from Munich, it harmoniously complements the castle scenery. 

Set on the banks of the Lech River, with its pale-coloured houses, baroque churches and charming little shops, all surrounded by snow-capped Alpine mountains, this lovely town will leave you with unforgettable memories.
