In addition, the resort is equipped with modern facilities, including well-maintained ski lifts, rental services (including Zero Point, which was great) and ski schools, making it an ideal destination for experienced skiers or those looking to experience the thrill of winter sports in a picturesque setting. 

And after a day on the slopes, enjoy the après-ski atmosphere in Levi. Many cafés and restaurants provide cosy environments to relax, warm up and socialise with other skiers and locals.

5- Explore on a fun husky tour

Levi is a popular destination for various winter activities, and husky safaris are among the most exciting experiences you can have! 

I participated in one during my time in Lapland at Rami’s Husky, and it was one of my favourite things to do. We greeted the dogs, and the owner explained to us how to control the sledge. We were two people per sledge – one driver and one passenger, with a stop halfway so you could switch.

It was going slower than expected, and we could use the breaks in case we needed them, but the sensations were fantastic. Plus, the scenery was incredible! 

Whether you are looking for a short husky ride or a more immersive multi-day experience, participating in a dog sledging tour in Levi can be a memorable and exhilarating adventure, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of the Arctic wilderness in a unique way.

In addition, the hotel complex is rebuilt each year, providing a magical and ephemeral winter experience. It is an activity especially great for families with children.

If you want to try something new, why not try cross-country skiing, a popular and accessible activity in Levi? Explore the network of well-maintained cross-country trails that meander through beautiful winter landscapes.

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced cross-country skier, the area offers an excellent setting for this winter activity, with many cross-country ski trails suitable for all levels. These routes will take you through snowy forests, across frozen lakes and offer breathtaking views of the Arctic scenery.

Do not worry if you do not have your own cross-country skiing equipment, you can rent skis, boots and poles from local ski rental shops in Levi. The staff will help you choose the right gear based on your skill level and preferences.

Typically, the ice fishing season runs from late fall to early spring when the lakes are frozen. Your guide will drill holes in the thick ice so you can drop your lines and patiently wait for a catch, often surrounded by the tranquil beauty of snow-covered landscapes. 

Many local guides or tour operators in Levi offer guided ice fishing excursions, providing equipment, expertise and sometimes even cosy shelters for a comfortable and authentic Lapland ice fishing experience.

Plus, you will have the opportunity to hear stories from your guide and learn more about traditional ice fishing techniques as well as the different varieties of local fish.

10- Unwind at the Arctic Sauna World

After a busy day of sightseeing and exploring, it is time to unwind at a traditional Finnish sauna, a cherished cultural ritual deeply ingrained in the Finnish lifestyle. The experience is not just about physical cleansing but also a social and spiritual activity where locals meet and discuss. 

You will usually find a sauna nearby or at your accommodation, but for an even more unique experience, head to the Arctic Sauna World located at Jeris Lakeside Resort.

The resort offers five different saunas based on the four elements to soothe both mind and body with peaceful views over Lake Jerisjärvi to put a finishing touch on total relaxation.

And for the most courageous, go for a swim in the Arctic lake either at the edge of the sandy beach or through a hole in the ice. A one-of-a-kind thing to do accessible for both first-time dippers and experienced winter swimmers.

11- Visit a traditional reindeer farm

Another unique Finnish experience you do not want to miss: visiting a traditional reindeer farm in Levi. Reindeer farming is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the indigenous Sámi people in Lapland, and many farms in the Levi region offer you the opportunity to learn about these iconic Arctic animals and the Sámi way of life. 

You will get up close and personal with the reindeer and discover their habits and characteristics. Depending on the farm, you may have the opportunity to feed them or go on a reindeer sleigh ride, making it a delightful and interactive adventure for all ages whilst experiencing the tranquillity of the Arctic wilderness.

Finally, reindeer farms will provide insights into Sámi culture, including traditional clothing, crafts and storytelling. You might also have the chance to interact with Sámi herders and better understand their customs. A winter activity I highly recommend!

I visited Lapinkylä Farm during my time in Lapland. We did not go on a sleigh ride, but we had the chance to see these adorable animals up close and take stunning photos.

Sámi Cultural Center Sajos, located in Inari, is a comprehensive centre providing insights into Sámi culture, history and contemporary life. Even though it is not in Levi, it is still worth the detour.

Local museums

Explore local museums or cultural centres in Levi that may offer exhibits or displays related to Sámi culture with information on traditional Sámi crafts, clothing and daily life, such as the Samiland Exhibition.

Reindeer farm visits

Reindeer herding is an integral part of Sámi culture. Visit a reindeer farm in Levi to learn about the significance of reindeer to the Sámi way of life, their herding practices and the role of reindeer in Sámi traditions.

Local events and festivals

Check the local events calendar to find out what Sámi festivals, cultural events or performances are taking place during your visit to Levi. These events often showcase traditional Sámi music, dance and crafts.

Café Panorama Laavu is located near the front slopes of Levi, inside the Hotel Levi Panorama. You can reach the café via a scenic path, and once there, you can enjoy hot drinks, wood-fired crepes and fried sausages with an incredible view of Pallas Fells.

At the heart of the café, you will find an open fire to warm up and relax after a long winter day of exploring, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. In addition, thanks to its front wall made of glass, you can admire the Northern Lights in winter or the midnight sun in summer. 

Finally, next to the Café Panorama Laavu, you will come across a panoramic tower from where you can admire the Lappish scenery even further, particularly ideal for photo enthusiasts.

How to get to Levi

The best way to get to Levi will depend on where you come from and your budget, but there are many options to reach this Lappish region.

One of the quickest ways to get to Levi is by plane. The nearest airport is Kittilä Airport (KTT), approximately 15 km away. Several airlines operate seasonal flights, especially during the winter months. I came from Manchester and had a flight connection in Helsinki. From the airport, you can then reach Levi by taxi, shuttle bus or rental car.

One of the most eco-friendly ways to get to Levi is by train. The nearest train station is in Kolari. From there, you can take a bus or taxi to Levi. Trains operated by VR (Finnish Railways) connect Helsinki to Kolari, and the journey takes approximately 12-14 hours.

Finally, the most affordable option for getting to Levi is by coach. It is a great way to reach the Lappish region if you are exploring Europe on a budget, but it may take longer. Long-distance buses connect various cities in Finland to Levi. You can check bus schedules and routes provided by companies like Matkahuolto or express bus services.

How to get around Levi

Once in Levi, you will find many options for getting around the area.

The best way (eco-friendly too) to travel around Levi is on foot. The village centre is compact, and many attractions, shops, restaurants and accommodations are within walking distance of each other. Plus, it is the perfect way to experience the best of the place whilst getting some exercise!

The best option to get around Levi faster is by public transport. You will find a local bus service connecting different parts of the village. Check the bus schedule online for routes and timings. In addition, some accommodations provide shuttle bus services for guests, offering transportation to popular attractions, ski slopes and the airport.

The other option to get around Levi and to further distances is by car rental. Renting a car gives you the flexibility and the freedom to explore Levi and its surrounding areas at your own pace. Car rental services are available in the village and at the airport, and roads are well-maintained, even in winter.

How to reduce your eco-impact in Levi

Sustainable travel means exploring the world whilst being aware of your surroundings and having a positive social, environmental and economic impact on the places you visit.

Being a responsible traveller in Levi is possible! Here are some eco-friendly travel tips for reducing your carbon footprint:

• If taking the plane is the only option, book direct flights if possible (which require less fuel than indirect flights) and offset your carbon footprint. But, do not use carbon offsetting as a complete solution.
