Are you ready for an unforgettable Icelandic adventure? Often referred to as the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is a dream destination that has something for everyone (especially nature lovers), from volcanoes, glaciers, active geysers, hot springs and waterfalls.
Whether you want to explore the vibrant arts scene of Reykjavik, discover the famous natural attractions of the Golden Circle or view the fascinating Northern Lights, this guide will help you plan your perfect vacation in Iceland, no matter when you are visiting this beautiful island.
Best time to visit Iceland
Spring (March to May) is a transitional period where the weather starts to warm up and the snow begins to melt, revealing vibrant landscapes. It is an excellent time for viewing the Northern Lights as the nights are still long enough. The increased daylight hours also make outdoor activities more enjoyable.
Summer (June to August) is characterised by the Midnight Sun, providing nearly 24 hours of daylight. It is the high season due to warmer temperatures and accessibility to highland areas that are otherwise difficult to reach. Plus, do not miss out on outdoor activities like hiking, bird watching (especially puffins) and whale watching.
Autumn (September to November) sees fewer tourists and offers a beautiful display of changing colours in the landscapes. September can still provide opportunities to see the Northern Lights as the nights grow longer. Keep in mind that the weather can be unpredictable, but the dramatic skies make for exceptional photo conditions.
Winter (December to February) envelops Iceland in snow and ice, offering a true Arctic experience with shorter days and longer nights. It is the best time to see the Northern Lights. Activities like glacier hiking and ice caving are also popular, and relaxing in geothermal hot springs is particularly enjoyable against the cold.
