Music lovers, you have come to the right place. The rich musical heritage of Vienna also comes alive with classical concerts in historic venues, including performances of Mozart and Strauss.

In addition, the Ringstrasse (a circular grand boulevard), lined with illuminated buildings, glows warmly in the crisp winter air, perfect for a bike ride if you are courageous, whilst cosy cafés invite you to indulge in Viennese coffee and pastries.

Finally, do not miss out on skating on the open-air ice rink at the Rathausplatz, surrounded by beautiful buildings, which adds to the winter enchantment of Vienna.

I visited Vienna for 3 days in February with my partner Matt. We just missed the Christmas markets and the ice rink, but the atmosphere was still lovely. It was also cheaper and less crowded, which was great to explore the city at our own pace.

Also, do not miss a wander through the narrow streets lined with colourful houses and twinkling lights, creating a warm contrast to the crisp and cold air.

The vibrant arts scene, along with the many cosy cafés and geothermal pools, provide a welcoming retreat from the cold, making Reykjavik an enchanting destination during the winter months.

I visited Iceland and Reykjavik in January, and I cannot recommend it enough during this season! The city itself is lovely to explore, and I would advise renting a car to also discover the surroundings, including the iconic Golden Circle. It is easy to access during winter and a great way to get a taste of the incredible natural wonders of the island.

The crisp and fresh air also invites you to explore picturesque neighbourhoods like Nyhavn (a 17th-century scenic waterfront), where colourful buildings reflect in the icy waters.

If it gets too cold, warm up in one of the many cafés, enjoying hot chocolate or gløgg, a traditional spiced wine, whilst savouring delicious Danish pastries.

The culture of Copenhagen also comes alive with plenty of winter events, but its overall atmosphere remains peaceful, making it a perfect winter destination in Europe, which I cannot recommend enough.

I visited Copenhagen for 3 days in January, and I instantly fell at home. I connected so well with the atmosphere of the city, including its many colourful houses, coffee shops and harbour. I admit that I was quite cold exploring it in winter, but it was worth it.

The city is also a hub for thrilling winter activities, including husky sledding, reindeer sleigh rides and snowshoe hiking through untouched wilderness.

In addition, the long and dark nights provide perfect conditions for witnessing the Northern Lights, casting a surreal glow over the snowy scenery, a fascinating experience you do not want to miss.

Cosying up in traditional Finnish saunas and staying in glass-roofed igloos to gaze at the starry sky also make Rovaniemi an unforgettable and fun winter destination in Europe for couples on a romantic escape.

I have never been to Rovaniemi, but I visited Finnish Lapland (Levi) in January with my brother and loved it! We spent a week there, and it was so much fun. Between skiing, snowshoe hiking, dog sledding, reindeer and Northern Lights, there is so much to do and see! It is the ultimate winter destination.

The historic towers and walls of the Old Town will also be illuminated, adding to the enchanting atmosphere for your winter stroll.

And if it gets too cold, cosy cafés and restaurants offer warmth and traditional Estonian dishes, making Tallinn a perfect mix of history, culture and winter charm.

The Royal Mile, illuminated by twinkling lights, will take you into the heart of the Old Town, where cosy pubs and cafés offer warmth and traditional Scottish food.

In December, the city also comes alive with the famous Christmas Market in Princes Street Gardens and the spectacular Hogmanay celebrations (New Year’s Eve), including fireworks and torchlight processions.

Finally, the nearby hills, such as Arthur’s Seat and Calton Hill, provide stunning winter views of Edinburgh, making it the perfect way to end a long day of sightseeing with a beautiful sunset over the city.

I have visited Edinburgh many times, and it is one of my favourite cities. It has an incredible atmosphere that I cannot even describe – you have to experience it for yourself, especially in winter. A few things I love the most are its architecture, stunning viewpoints and cute cafés. And if you can, I also recommend renting a car or joining a guided tour to explore the highlands.

With fewer tourists and more affordable prices, winter offers a rare opportunity to experience the timeless magic of Venice in a more relaxed and authentic way, especially ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway during the holiday season.

I visited Venice in late December with my partner Matt for a few days, and I do not regret choosing this season. The streets were quieter and much easier to navigate (as they were very narrow). It can also get very hot in summer, so I felt more comfortable exploring in winter. Plus, travelling off-peak will allow you to get to know the culture better and have a more authentic experience, as Venice highly suffer from over-tourism.

After a day out exploring in the cold, you will enjoy the lively cultural scene, cosy cafés and warm hospitality of the city, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all despite the short daylight and long polar nights.

Finally, the mix of modern architecture and traditional wooden houses in Tromsø, set against the backdrop of fjords and mountains, makes it a uniquely beautiful and memorable European winter destination.

I visited Tromsø in November as part of a cruise along the western fjords. Unfortunately, we only had a stopover for a few hours, but I wish we could have stayed a little longer as I enjoyed its atmosphere and there are so many things to do. Also, Norway in winter is one of my favourite places! This cruise was simply magical, an experience I will never forget. I also visited Bergen for a few days in November and loved it just as much.

Finally, the winter season brings delightful experiences like ice skating at the Hôtel de Ville, visiting the Christmas markets and enjoying the renowned museums of the city with fewer crowds.

Having grown up next to Paris and having lived there for a while, I can say that winter and the holiday season are one of my favourite times to discover the French capital! Sustainable travel means exploring the world whilst being aware of your surroundings and having a positive social, environmental and economic impact on the places you visit.

Being a responsible traveller whilst enjoying your winter holiday break in Europe is possible! Here are some sustainable tips for reducing your carbon footprint:

• Use green methods of transport. Use public transport as much as possible to travel to and from your destination (train or coach). Europe has a fantastic transport network that can take you anywhere, even on a budget. Once at your destination, prioritise walking or cycling as much as possible.

• Select an eco-friendly accommodation. It is not always easy to determine whether a hotel has eco-conscious practices, but try to look on their website for green credentials, such as Green Key or eco-labels, and ask questions. You can also use StayAltered or Ecobnb to help you decide.

• Minimise energy use. Adjust the thermostat in your accommodation to a reasonable level, and avoid keeping windows open when the heating is on. When not in use, unplug chargers and electronic devices to reduce energy consumption.

• Shop local & eat at local restaurants that use produce from the region. It will contribute to the local economy and reduce your carbon footprint by supporting restaurants where food does not come from long distances.

• Choose sustainable tours and activities. Opt for eco-friendly tours and activities that support local communities and ecosystems. Avoid activities that involve harm to wildlife or contribute to environmental degradation.

• Treat the landscapes and wildlife with respect. When exploring natural areas, stay on designated trails to minimise your impact. Do not come close to animals, do not feed them and respect their home.

• Bring a reusable filtered water bottle with you. It will help avoid buying single-use plastic bottles that will be wasted. Instead, refill your water bottle wherever you can – at a fountain or river! It will also help you save money and stay hydrated on the go.

• Do not leave a trace. Do not litter, and pick up any trash you encounter. Leftover waste can be extremely harmful to the local ecosystem. So, once again, be zero waste and take your garbage with you. 

• Always respect the local heritage. Treat people and their surroundings with respect. Sustainable travel is not only about the environment but also about the local communities. So, always be respectful and smile!
