How to reduce your eco-impact on a hike

Reducing your eco-impact on a hike is essential for preserving the natural environment, particularly in fragile locations.

READ MORE: Sustainable Hiking Guide: 10 Easy Eco-Tips

Here are a few tips to minimise your environmental footprint in the UK whilst enjoying the outdoors:

  • Stay on designated trails: stick to established and marked paths to avoid disturbing fragile ecosystems and minimise soil erosion. Please, do not take shortcuts!
  • Leave no trace: pack out all your waste, including food scraps and litter. Leave natural and cultural elements as you found them, so others can enjoy the same unspoiled setting. You can also pick up any trash you come across.
  • Use a reusable water bottle: carry a refillable water bottle to reduce single-use plastic waste. Refill it at designated water sources when available, such as streams and lakes. Perfect for staying hydrated on the go.
  • Dispose of waste properly: if there are no waste facilities, take away all waste, including biodegradable items like fruit peels. Follow the pack it in, pack it out principle. It is also a good idea to bring a biodegradable bin bag with you.
  • Choose eco-friendly gear: opt for outdoor gear made from sustainable materials and companies with environmentally responsible practices.
  • Minimise campfire impact: if fires are permitted and necessary, use established fire rings and keep the fire small. You can also use a camp stove for cooking to reduce the need for fires.
  • Respect wildlife: observe animals from a distance and avoid feeding or touching them. You can also keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing wildlife. In addition, pay attention to where you drive, park your car and walk.
  • Always respect the local heritage. Treat people and their surroundings with respect. Sustainability is not only about the environment but also about the local communities. So, always be respectful and smile!
