I visited the Algarve in May for 5 days, and to my surprise, I went to the beach every day without exemption. I discovered it has some of the prettiest beaches I have ever experienced, and I am usually not a beach person!
Known as one of the best summer destinations in Europe, the beaches in the Algarve have something so special. I especially loved finding hidden gems for a quiet and relaxing time. The only thing was how strong the waves were and how cold the water was. But even in spring, going for a swim was so nice and refreshing!
Plus, each beach offers something different depending on your needs and whether you are travelling alone, with children, with friends or as a couple. Yes, there is something for everyone!

10 most beautiful beaches in the Algarve
Selecting the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve was not an easy task. There are so many gorgeous spots in southern Portugal, with plenty of hidden gems and secret locations!
However, I still believe these 10 beaches will provide a unique experience and suit different needs, from couples wanting some peace to families with children looking for fun or surfers seeking thrills. Enjoy 🏖

1- Praia de Dona Ana, Lagos
The best overall 💛
We start our top 10 with Praia de Dona Ana, the most beautiful beach in the Algarve, renowned for its clear blue water and impressive golden cliffs. You will find this hidden gem between Lagos and Ponta da Piedade, accessible with wooden stairs (perfect for photos!).
Once you discover it, you will understand why it is one of the most photographed beaches in Portugal.
Although the beach is not that big, it offers plenty of space for everyone, with some shadows near the cliffs, perfect for protection on a hot sunny day, especially for young children.
Praia de Dona Ana is also ideal for snorkelling, as the water is exceptionally transparent and calm, with almost no currents or big waves and a diversity of flora and fauna species to discover underwater.
However, keep in mind that the water in southern Portugal can be cold, and it can take some time to get used to it, but once inside, it is worth it!
Finally, as this popular spot can get very busy in the summer, plan your visit off-season or come early to avoid the crowds.

2- Praia do Camilo, Lagos
Good for photo lovers 📷
It is impossible not to mention Praia do Camilo as one of the prettiest beaches in the Algarve! This secluded and picture-perfect spot is located near Lagos and is one of the best things to do in the area.
To access this characteristic beach, walk down a wooden staircase of 200 steps, creating a superb composition for photos, especially at sunset.
Once on the beach, I am sure you will be amazed at how soft the sand is, but you will also notice that the beach is relatively small in size whilst being incredibly popular, particularly in the summer. Therefore, visit it at low tide to have enough space or early morning to avoid the crowds.
The other option would be to visit it at sunset for a relaxing evening, which is also a romantic thing to do for couples!
To top it off, the sea at Praia do Camilo is incredibly calm and clean, making it an ideal beach for swimming and snorkelling, but also for kayaking, as it is perfect for starting a trip to Punda da Piedade. And if you are more into walking, head up to the top of the cliffs and follow the coastal path for stunning views.

3- Praia de São Rafael, Albufeira
Good for its relaxed atmosphere ✨
Praia de São Rafael is a stunning beach near Albufeira, famous for its impressive rock formations with odd shapes. It is one of the best things to do in the area and is worth the visit on an Algarve road trip.
Surrounded by dramatic red and orange-coloured cliffs, this beautiful soft golden sand beach is big enough for everybody, with two sections depending on if you want a sunbed or not.
As Praia de São Rafael is easily accessible but far enough from Albufeira, you will find fewer visitors than nearby beaches, ideal for a relaxing day at the seaside. Take a nap, go for a swim or rent a paddleboard – there is plenty to do for all ages.
However, although the water is clear with a pleasant temperature, the current is strong in this location, so be careful. Also, watch out for the rocks in the water.
And if you are visiting the beach at sunset, enjoy the epic views and gorgeous colours on top of the cliffs – the perfect way to end the day!

4- Praia da Marinha, Lagoa
Good for families 🧒🏼
Praia da Marinha is one of the most emblematic beaches in Portugal, located near Lagoa, and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Once there, enjoy the panoramic views over the steep cliffs and take the long staircase down to reach the beach.
Famous for families and suitable for children, this iconic spot is well-maintained, with soft sand and space for everybody, although it can get crowded in the summer (but not as bad as other Portuguese beaches as you can only reach Praia da Marinha by car).
In addition, the beach is a popular destination for snorkelling, as the water is calm and almost transparent with no strong currents or waves – the perfect place for a family beach day trip!
And if you are more into hiking, Praia da Marinha is also the place for you. The beach provides many coastal paths to discover the surrounding area, including the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, which takes you through stunning spots such as the famous rock that looks like the letter M and creates a heart shape or the renowned Benagil cave (which you can also experience from the water by renting a kayak or joining a tour).

5- Praia da Falésia, Albufeira
Good for beach walks 🚶🏻♀️
Even if you are not a beach lover, Praia da Falésia should be on your bucket list, as this gorgeous stop is worth the visit. Characterized by breathtaking red-orange cliffs, it is one of the best beaches in the Algarve, also known as Beach of Cliffs.
Over 6 kilometres long and featuring beautiful soft sand, it is the perfect place to relax or swim in clean crystal-clear water, especially refreshing on a hot summer day.
Praia da Falésia is also an excellent destination for a beach walk. You will be amazed by the orange rocks contrasting with the green pines and the blue sky, so do not forget to bring your camera.
Plus, you will find a scenic hiking trail on top of the cliffs, offering stunning views over the beach and the sea – whether you decide to head east or west.

6- Praia dos Arrifes, Sesmarias
Good for snorkelling 🤿
Characterised by large rock formations in the water, Praia dos Arrifes is a small beach offering a unique natural landscape with low cliffs protecting you from the wind, making it a perfect place to enjoy the sun and relax.
Especially popular with families and couples, this beautiful golden sand beach is not the best for swimming due to the rocks in the water but is an excellent destination for snorkelling, as you will find plenty of wildlife underwater.
And because of its small size, the beach can get busy in the summer, so try to visit it early morning to avoid the crowds and later in the day.
In addition, it is best to visit Praia dos Arrifes at low tide to explore the nearby coves and bathe in natural pools among the rocks, which provide lots of fun for children – or adults.
Finally, the beach offers plenty of opportunities to venture out on a picturesque walk and hike on the cliffs towards Praia do Castelo any time of the year.

7- Praia do Carvalho, Lagoa
Good for its secluded location 🔒
Praia do Carvalho is a hidden gem and secluded beach famous for its breathtaking scenery and exceptionally clean water. Because of its small size and remote location, it is a quiet spot ideal for couples or solo travellers looking to get away from the crowds.
To access this magical beach, you will have to go down through a man-made tunnel in the rock, which is the only way to reach it, making it even more special.
Once there, enjoy walking on the golden soft sand and swimming in crystal-clear water. It is also one of the best places for snorkelling in the Algarve. And if you are feeling adventurous, you can try cliff jumping!
Surrounded by high cliffs, the beach offers plenty of shade and protection from the wind if you prefer to relax and marvel at the scenery. But do not sit directly underneath the cliffs as there is a risk of falling rocks.
Finally, Praia do Carvalho is also part of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail if you like hiking and is close to the Benagil cave, which you can reach in a few minutes on foot by heading east or through the sea with a kayak.

8- Praia da Arrifana, Aljezur
Good for surfing 🏄🏻♂️
Praia da Arrifana is a popular surfing destination located in the small fishing village of Arrifana. It is a stunning place to visit, go on a diving trip or learn how to surf any time of the year (with a wetsuit, of course, as the water is quite cold even in summer).
Surrounded by steep black cliffs and traditional white houses, this long narrow beach stretches for more than half a kilometre and is a beautiful spot to explore for its interesting rocks and shapes in the back.
Between soft golden sand, transparent water and great waves, it is a true haven for surfers of all skill levels, even if you are a complete beginner. The beach is the ideal place to learn and give confidence.
However, plan your visit in advance as, at high tide, the beach becomes incredibly narrow and almost disappears! But it is still most definitely worth the visit.
Plus, the top of the cliffs provides plenty of walking trails to wander along the coast and enjoy a spectacular sunset.

9- Praia da Rocha, Portimão
Good for water sports ⛵️
Praia da Rocha is one of the most popular beaches in the Algarve, offering fun and entertainment for all ages day and night. Surrounded by spectacular rock formations, Rocky Beach is perfect for families with children or young adults, as it provides plenty of opportunities for a variety of water sports, from surfing to sailing and kayaking.
Contrary to what many people think, there are no rocks in the water, making it the ideal stop to take a dip and swim in clear water, great on a hot summer day!
And since it is one of the most popular destinations in southern Portugal, expect a lot of people in the summer and on weekends. Fortunately, the beach is long and wide with plenty of space for everybody.
In addition, one of the best things to do in the area is take a relaxing walk towards other nearby beaches. You will also find at the back of Praia da Rocha a wooden boardwalk to stroll along the beach with several bars and restaurants where you can stop for a well-deserved break.
Finally, this emblematic beach is one of the best places to party in the Algarve! The area around Praia da Rocha is famous for its vibrant nightlife and offers many possibilities to dance the night away.

10- Praia do Tonel, Sagres
Goof for authentic vibes 🌊
Praia do Tonel is a beautiful golden sand beach near Sagres that provides a wild and remote feel and is extremely popular among surfers for its strong waves.
Backed by steep red-orange cliffs, the beach offers perfect shelter from the wind, where you can also encounter spectacular rock formations. On the other hand, do not stay underneath the cliffs, as the area is prone to fallen rocks.
Because of its rough waves, strong currents and rocks in the water, the beach is not recommended for swimming or families with children. However, it is a great place to explore for its authentic vibe, take some photos and try surfing.
You will find experienced surfers all year round, but if you are a complete beginner, it is advisable to only surf in the summer when the conditions are suitable.
Finally, Praia do Tonel is one of the best places in the Algarve to watch the sunset. Bring some blankets and spend a romantic evening marvelling at the sky and its gorgeous colours.

Tips for a sustainable beach trip
Sustainable travel means exploring the world whilst being aware of your surroundings and having a positive social, environmental and economic impact on the places you visit. And this applies when going to the beach too!
Coasts and oceans are very fragile ecosystems that require our attention. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce our impact on a beach trip and create a positive experience for everyone. Adopting eco-responsible habits and bringing sustainable items are part of it.
To help you further, here are some easy and practical green tips for an unforgettable holiday by the sea:
- Stay in green accommodation: it is not always easy to determine whether a guesthouse or hotel has eco-conscious practices, but try to look on their website for green credentials and ask questions. You can also use Bookdifferent or Ecobnb to help you decide. And if you like nature and the outdoors, why not go on a camping trip?
- Prioritise eco-friendly methods of transport: stay near the beach so you can easily access it on foot. Otherwise, rent a bike or use public transport such as buses.
- Respect wildlife and do not feed animals: do not come close to animals on land and in the sea. Do not touch them or feed them and respect their home. Also, always pay attention to where you drive, park your car and walk.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen: be careful of which sunscreen you use, as most commercial creams contain chemicals harmful to the environment and marine life. So choose a zero-waste and natural sunscreen, good for your skin and the planet.
- Choose eco-friendly water activities: if you decide to do a water activity, go for carbon-neutral such as kayaking, paddle boarding or surfing. They will reduce your impact, generate no noise and protect marine life.
- Do not collect shells and sand: shells, pebbles and sand all form the ecosystem of our coastlines. It may be tempting, but taking them and bringing them back home is harmful and weakens this ecosystem. This applies to the underwater world too.
- Stick to marked trails: always stay on marked paths when going to the beach or strolling along the coast. The dunes are home to a fragile ecosystem, and walking on them can have a catastrophic effect.
- Leave no trace: always pick up your trash or any you come across, and avoid plastic at all costs. Leftover waste can be extremely harmful to the local ecosystem. And to take it a step further, you can join a beach clean-up event.
- Buy and eat local: ask the locals where they like to eat, buy your food at local markets, avoid big resorts and head to local vegetarian and vegan restaurants supporting farmers and sustainable produce. The same goes for the souvenirs you bring home.

The best way to get around the Algarve in Portugal is by car. It will allow you to move freely and reach remote beaches. Another option would be to use public transport, such as the train or bus. Finally, if you feel adventurous, rent and explore by bike.
The best time to visit the Algarve and enjoy its many beaches is in spring and autumn when the weather is sunny and warm, but the places are not too busy and crowded. These are ideal seasons for relaxing on the beach, walking along the coast and enjoying watersports.
I suggest spending at least 3 or more days in the Algarve, as there are so many beaches to explore, coastal walks to discover and water sports to do such as surfing and kayaking. As you can imagine, you will not get bored!
